The Johns Hopkins Neighborhood Fund (JHNF), part of Johns Hopkins University’s Community Health Investment program, partners with Wolfe Street Academy (WSA), a Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP) neighborhood conversion charter school serving the Upper Fells Point communities. JHNF provides fresh fruits and vegetables to Wolfe Street families in need of healthier food choices.

Created in 2007, the nonprofit JHNF supports nonprofit organizations serving communities in close proximity to Hopkins campuses and are associated with Johns Hopkins through employee or institutional involvement.

JHNF’s monthly distribution of fresh fruit and vegetable distribution, overseen by Lawanda Johnson at JHNF, provides critical resources to families who are food-insecure. WSA’s lead community partner, Elev8 Baltimore, uses JHNF grant funds to purchase and receive healthy food items and to distribute to students and families in need throughout the year to reduce their hunger and improve their overall health and family functioning.

“We have WSA students and parents approaching the school every week requesting food assistance,” explains Heidi Weiss-Beedie, the school’s Community School Coordinator. “The demand is significantly greater than our supply. The JHNF grant enables us to be a greater support to our families in need, providing them with adequate food items to prevent their hunger over weekends and school breaks.”

Thank you, JHNF, for your continued commitment to BCP and Wolfe Street Academy’s students and families.
