This June, Pimlico Elementary / Middle School and Wolfe Street Academy received two major beautification/facility improvements.
Pimlico received landscaping of its front, side and back entrances, thanks to funding from a grant by Concentration of Poverty Grant that provided an emphasis for School Beautification. It provides a lovely welcome to students, staff, families, stakeholders and visitors to the historic Pimlico campus. Flower beds were weeded and then planted with colorful perennial plants and shrubs, and flower beds throughout the campus were mulched. Also, flood and solar lights were installed in front of the school to showcase the landscaping at night.
This project allowed the landscaper an opportunity to provide the staff and students to learn about horticulture, the science of trees and flowers on a smaller scale. In addition to plant science and STEM components, students enjoyed real-world lessons on entrepreneur endeavors, community preservation, team building, critical thinking, and decision making.
Wolfe Street received new 21st century lighting upgrades throughout the school, provided by the Baltimore City Public Schools’ Office of Operations at no cost. City School Districts Energy Section under Ms. Raj Bachubhay partnered with Summit Building Solutions and BGE Smart Energy Savers Program for Wolfe Street Academy to be included in an eight site lighting upgrade project. The lighting upgrades were able to be completed overnight, and school was ready for teaching the next day.
The Lighting upgrades replaced fixtures in most classrooms, offices, hallways, and the cafeteria.
The new lighting is energy efficient, durable, easy to maintain, and provides energy, HVAC, and maintenance savings.
Maintaining and improving our school facilities is vitally important to BCP. Where our students learn and our teachers teach is as important as what is taught. We’re proud that three of our six schools are in state-of-the-art, 21st century buildings, and that City Springs Elementary / Middle School is slated for a new building in the coming years.
