Last month, the Hampstead Hill Academy (HHA) Chess team competed in the three-day, K-6 National Championships, held in Baltimore at the Convention Center on May 12-14. More than 2,100 kids from 38 states gathered to compete.
The 19 HHA chess team broke their record from last year, winning 45 hard-fought matches competing against the best players in the country. HHA student Spencer Cappolla became 5th place champion in the U.S. in the K-5 Under 1200 division.
This was the HHA Chess team’s second national competition. A few students came very close to breaking into the top 15 in their sections, but the competition was fierce, and they will have to test their skills again in the next nationals.
