The FIRST LEGO League teams at Govans Elementary School and Wolfe Street Academy earned impressive results at the Baltimore City FLL Qualifying Tournament on Saturday, February 8, 2025.
The Govans Dragon Designers won first place in the Innovation Project for the competition and will be advancing to the Maryland state competition on February 22.
This year’s Innovation theme was “Submerged,” with each team asked to identify a problem faced by people who explore the oceans, and develop an innovative solution. The Dragons focused on the inability to explore the deepest parts of the ocean due to the pressure changes. They researched submersibles, spoke to multiple experts in the field, and developed their solution: the “Blob-mersible.” a blob-fish-inspired submersible that combines several innovative features to combat water pressure, including using layers of syntactic foam and synthetic biolipids to mimic a blob fish.
“The judges were especially impressed with the team’s level of research,” says Amanda Porter, Education Manager at LET’S GO. “This tournament capped a year of hard work and persistence from the Govans’ team and their coaches. We are so proud of everything the team has accomplished, and can’t wait to see what they do next!
The Wolfe Street RoboWolves won their first FIRST LEGO League trophy in the competition as a finalist in Robot Design.
This award is given to a team that uses outstanding programming principles and solid engineering practices to develop a robot that is mechanically sound, durable, efficient, and highly capable of performing challenge missions. “The judges were impressed by RoboWolves’ innovative attachments, perseverance in solving missions, and their documentation of their progress over the season,” Ms. Porter explains.
Congratulations to each team, coaches, and family members for such impressive accomplishments.
Thank you, LET’S GO, for your continued partnership with BCP schools.
