Community Partner Spotlight: The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland

Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP) is proud to spotlight The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland for their outstanding support of Hampstead Hill Academy’s (HHA) National History Day on January 16, 2026, part of the BCP Volunteer Service Days to celebrate BCP’s 30th anniversary.

Boys’ Latin’s new partnership and commitment to service played a meaningful role in making this important academic event a success.

A group of 30 Boys’ Latin students from grades 9–12 volunteered their time to serve as judges, thoughtfully reviewing student projects and providing meaningful feedback. Their engagement helped create an authentic and encouraging experience for HHA’s middle school students, which reinforced the value of research, presentation skills, and academic confidence.

HHA was especially grateful for the Boys’ Latin students who are bilingual in English and Spanish. These students provided critical language support to HHA scholars who are less proficient in English, helping ensure every student could fully participate, explain their thinking, and engage confidently in the judging process. This bilingual support allowed students to share their work in their native language when needed, removing barriers and creating a more inclusive and equitable experience.

The students were accompanied by dedicated faculty and staff who helped guide and support the day: Kristen Tubman and Dominic Minicozzi (Upper School Spanish Teachers); Stephen Roche (Upper School Learning Specialist and 9th Grade Dean); and Eric Whitehair (Upper School History Teacher)

Both Ms. Tubman and Mr. Minicozzi shared their interest in partnering with HHA again in the future, seeing this experience as a meaningful way to connect students across schools and extend learning beyond the classroom.

Voices from the Day

“We were all so impressed by the students! The BL guys were excited to tell each other about their favorite projects and were blown away by the overall quality. From the moment we walked in and were confidently greeted by students, to the well-organized briefing, then the projects themselves—it was all incredibly well done.”
Kristen Tubman, Boys’ Latin Spanish Teacher

“It was a really good experience. I enjoyed talking with students of Hispanic origin and using my Spanish. The students were very enthusiastic to present, and I liked that my classmates and I could give constructive feedback that helped them improve their projects for the final. It felt good to play a role in the process.”
Neil Farrell ’27, Boys’ Latin Student Volunteer

“I have to say, as a history teacher, I was impressed by the quality and depth of historical scholarship I saw at Hampstead Hill Academy during our day of service. Nearly every student I spoke with understood the importance of sources and source interpretation. It was clear how much work went into these research projects, and it was wonderful to see such genuine enthusiasm for history.”

— Eric Whitehair, Boys’ Latin History Teacher

“Hampstead Hill was a wonderful and educational experience for our boys. The day began with an instructional session led by Matthew Cobb, an academic coach at Hampstead Hill, who taught students how to use their scorecards and interact with presentations. Afterward, our students visited projects, provided feedback that will help prepare students for their annual national History competition, and used their Spanish-speaking skills to support students who chose to present in Spanish. Overall, the presentations were outstanding, and our students were extremely professional and served as positive role models for the middle school students.”
