Learning That Never Stops: Update on BCP Virtual Learning Days

The Baltimore City Public Schools’ (City Schools) approved calendar for SY 25-26 included three built-in snow days. On January 25, 2026, Baltimore was blanketed with more than eight inches of snow and ice, bringing much of the city to a standstill. City Schools, the educational partner for the Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP) for 30 years, utilized all three snow days.

As per the City Schools policy (and, thus, the BCP policy), once the snow days are used, the district shifts to virtual learning during inclement weather to ensure instructional time continues without extending the school year further. On January 29 and 30, the district and BCP transitioned seamlessly into two days of virtual learning.

Our BCP schools handled the transition like champions, checking in on students, adjusting plans, and ensuring learning didn’t miss a beat. We are incredibly proud of our teachers and students for their flexibility, resilience, and positive attitudes as they adapted to virtual learning together.

As we enter February, inclement weather is still possible.

Here are some tips to help families make the most of virtual learning:

Virtual Learning Tips

  1. Designated Space: Choose a quiet, well-lit area away from TVs or play areas.
  2. Organization: Keep essential supplies (pencils, headphones, paper, computer, tablet, etc.) within easy reach.
  3. Comfort: Ensure your child’s desk and chair are comfortable for extended use.
  4. Minimize Distractions: Reduce background noise and limit unrelated screen time during school hours.
  5. Consistent Schedule: Wake up, eat breakfast, and start school at the same time every day. Consider posting a daily schedule where your child can see it.
  6. Prep Ahead: Set up technology, log in, familiarize yourself with the learning platform, and check assignments ahead of time.
  7. Active Participation: Encourage your child to ask questions, participate in discussions, and use chat features during live sessions.
  8. Communicate with Teachers: Reach out for support or clarification on assignments as needed.
  9. Be Patient: Virtual learning requires new skills and flexibility, so patience is key.
  10. Practice Digital Citizenship: Teach online etiquette: mute when not speaking, follow camera rules, and communicate in chat if stepping away so the teacher knows your child is still present.

Please note that, due to January’s inclement weather, the final day of school for SY 2025-2026 is June 16, 2026, for every school in the district.
