Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP) schools came alive with excitement as students and staff celebrated Read Across America Week (March 2-6), honoring the birthday of beloved author Dr. Seuss. Across our schools, classrooms were filled with creative activities that brought reading to life.
Govans Elementary
It takes a village to raise a reader, and our community showed up in a big way at Govans Elementary. Throughout the week, students celebrated with themed spirit days that encouraged both creativity and a love of reading. Students kicked off the week on Monday by wearing t-shirts representing their favorite places to go, sparking conversations and writing about places they love to explore. Other days focused on positive words, reminding students that reading builds confidence and imagination, while another highlighted the message that “Readers Are Future Leaders.” The week also included “Hats on for Reading,” when students proudly wore their favorite hats while diving into books together. From older students mentoring their Book Buddies to a special guest from the Baltimore Ravens inspiring everyone to reach for their goals, the message was clear: reading is a superpower. Watching our students “Drop Everything and Read” reminded us all to slow down, dive into a good book, and rediscover the joy of reading.
Pimlico Elementary/Middle
Pimlico Elementary/Middle students enjoyed a Seuss-inspired spirit week with themed days that brought energy and creativity to every classroom. Students showed their school pride on Monday by wearing college shirts or gear, embraced fun patterns with stripes or favorite hats on Tuesday, and went wild in animal print on Wednesday. Thursday was Pajama Day, giving students the chance to cozy up with a book, and Friday closed the week with a well-deserved school break.
March 4 was also Math & Literacy Night for families. Families enjoyed a meal and math and reading games throughout the afternoon event.
City Springs Elementary/Middle
On March 4, The Angel C. Reese Foundation, in partnership with Our Kids Read, hosted a program for City Springs Elementary/Middle’s grades 3-5. Entitled Women’s Stories: A Women’s History Month Literacy Celebration, the event include Angel Reese’s mother, “Mamma Angel,” and other esteemed women:
Students received free books from Our Kids Read at the end of the event, which also celebrated Women’s History Month.
These celebrations go beyond fun—they highlight the vital role of literacy in a child’s development. Reading helps students build critical thinking skills, expand vocabulary, and strengthen comprehension, laying the foundation for lifelong learning. By fostering a love of books, BCP schools are helping students develop confidence, imagination, and curiosity that extend far beyond the classroom.
As we celebrate the joy of reading, we are reminded that literacy is not just about books. It’s about empowering our students to explore new ideas, express themselves, and dream big. Thanks to the creativity and dedication of our educators, students, and community partners, Read Across America Week at BCP schools was a resounding success, filled with learning, laughter, and a shared love for stories.
