In March, New York Times best-selling author, Kate Messner, visited Frederick Elementary School for a very special event. The author of more than fifty books for young readers, including The Next President, the Over and Under series, the History Smashers series, and more, Kate is the recipient of the Empire State Award for excellence in literature for young people.
She read a chapter of her newest book for her wildlife series, Wildlife Rescue: How to Save a Sea Turtle to the 3rd grade. This engaging chapter book follows cousins Ivy and Ezra. As volunteer “critter couriers,” they transport an injured gopher tortoise to a hospital and plan safer crossings, offering young readers a science-based, compassionate look at wildlife conservation.
Students were fascinated by her book and the photos she shared of her in the wild, an experience that inspired her writing.
Ms. Messner then led an interactive session where she had the students create a character for a new story. She also signed a copy of her new book for each budding conservationist and writer to take home. The program was organized by Ms. Zarra, Frederick’s Librarian.
