Following his time at City Springs, Cortez attended The REACH! Partnership School, where he continued to excel both academically and athletically. His hard work culminated in an outstanding 4.5 GPA at graduation

As an outstanding track and field athlete, he was also recognized by Mayor Brandon Scott with a completion certificate for his achievements in a Baltimore City Public Schools HVAC apprenticeship, Cortez’s chosen trade at REACH.

Throughout high school, Cortez demonstrated consistent leadership and school spirit. He served as Class Vice President and earned the honor of Prom King, reflecting both the respect of his peers and his positive presence in his school community.

College/Next Step

This fall, Cortez will attend Bowie State University on a full academic scholarship, where he will continue his track and field career while majoring in Sports Medicine.

Q: What is your favorite City Springs memory?

My favorite memory from City Springs was when I first got involved in the after-school activities. It was one of the first times I chose to step outside of my comfort zone. I joined activities like drama, golf, and mixed martial arts, and those experiences helped me become more confident and try new things.

Q: How did City Springs prepare you for high school and college?

City Springs gave me the confidence to get involved in different activities and helped shape me before I entered high school. Because of what I learned there, I made one of my best decisions in high school by choosing the HVAC trade through the REACH program. That led to the BCPS apprenticeship, where I learned how to balance academics, athletics, and a real work environment. Completing the apprenticeship earned me a completion certificate presented by Mayor Brandon Scott. The lessons I learned through City Springs and REACH have continued to help me as I begin my journey at Bowie State University.

Excerpt from 2026 Commencement Speech at City Springs

“To everyone here graduating today, remember that you are capable of achieving anything you set your mind to. Always strive to be leaders in whatever you do…I wish you all success in high school, and remember to always be your best.”

Congratulations, Cortez!

We are proud of all you have accomplished and can’t wait to see what you do next.
