How Families Stay Connected with BCP Schools

The start of a new school year is about more than new classrooms, new teachers, and new routines. It is also a time for school communities to come together.

Over the past several weeks, all six Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP) schools have hosted Back-to-School Nights, welcoming families into their buildings and creating opportunities to meet teachers, learn about the year ahead, ask questions, and connect with other members of the school community.

These events are an important first step, but building a strong school community is something that happens all year long.

Why Family Engagement Matters

Family engagement is at the heart of BCP’s community school model. Strong partnerships among families, students, educators, and community members help create welcoming and supportive schools where people can build relationships, access resources, share their voices, and feel a strong sense of belonging.

For students, meaningful engagement can provide additional encouragement and support for learning. When the important adults in a student’s life communicate and work together, they can develop a better understanding of the student’s strengths, interests, needs, and goals. Opportunities such as parent-teacher conferences, school events, and regular communication help families and educators stay connected and work together to support students.

For schools, family engagement creates opportunities to hear directly from the people who know their students and communities best. Families can share perspectives, identify needs, celebrate successes, and contribute ideas that help schools strengthen their programs and build trust. Groups such as Parent-Teacher Organizations (PTOs) and School Family Councils (SFCs) provide important opportunities for families to share their voices and play an active role in their school communities.
