Wolfe Street Academy’s (WSA) Chess Club, The Wolfe Street Wolves, won first place at the invitational chess meet sponsored by Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP) afterschool program partner, Boardroom Chess. All three BCP schools competing “swept the board” in the elementary/middle category with WSA in 1st Place, Frederick Elementary/Middle taking 2nd Place, and Govans Elementary “Dragons” rounding out the podium in 3rd Place.
Our Wolves – 4th and 5th graders Alexis, Kallen, Yovani, Jatziry and Afrodys – were engaged, focused and determined during each match. We’re so proud of them!
The BoardRoom Chess end of year Tournament, held on May 10, 2023, at the 
University of Maryland Baltimore Community Engagement Center, included four BCP schools – Govans, Frederick, Wolfe Street Academy, and Pimlico Elementary/Middle School – as well as Wildwood Elementary/Middle, Carver Vocational Technical High School, Reach Partnership, Edmondson High School, and Coppin Academy. Only the top five players from each school were allowed to compete in the tournament.
Earlier this year, on February 27th, Govans hosted the first BoardRoom Chess Tournament with entire teams from Govans, Frederick, Wolfe Street Academy, Wildwood Elementary/Middle School, and Calvin M. Rodwell Elementary/ Middle School competing.
Each BCP school has its own BoardRoom Chess coach who works with the students as part of BCP’s robust afterschool enrichment offerings. BCP’s afterschool offerings include academics, enrichment classes, and a variety of elective clubs like Chess Club.
At Frederick, Coach Thomas, who has worked with Frederick students for three years, included virtual lessons during COVID. BoardRoom’s Kim Hicks has been coaching with Wolfe Street’s team for two years. This is Govans’ first year with BoardRoom Chess, coached by Jamal Davis.
A popular offering, Chess Club is just one example of how the afterschool program expands student thinking, joy, and success.
