Ryan Galloway, CPA (inactive), brings impressive financial expertise to the Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP). He’s the Financial Controller at hyper-growth startup, Cinq Care, Managing director of BeMore Corporate Solutions technology enablement firm supporting the federal government, co-founder and partner of BlackPrint Capital Management, teaches business formation and taxation at Maryland Institute College of Art, and  has served on several boards, including as an executive committee member and National Secretary for the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) and the committee of the American Cancer Society Taste for Life Fundraiser.

He also brings a unique perspective to BCP’s mission to improve public education in Baltimore City. A lifelong City resident, Ryan attended Baltimore City Public Schools, from Kindergarten through 12th grade. His mother, Doretha Galloway, was a principal at Madison Square Elementary School and assistant principal at Pimlico Elementary / Middle School before it was part of the BCP network of neighborhood conversion public charter schools.

We talked with Ryan about his BCP service and his love for his hometown of Baltimore.

What does it mean to serve on the BCP Board?

I joined the BCP board in 2010. It’s a great way to be actively involved in what I believe is one of the critical elements to the transformation and growth of Baltimore City. Education has always been important to me and instilled by Mom as a tenant towards future success. The value of education was a lived and shared belief modeled daily in our home during [my childhood] as my mother administratively led several schools around Baltimore city over her 40-year career with BCPS. My mom’s commitment to the city extended beyond being a career administrator but also to ensuring we continued to live in the city, directly participating in the “change we would like to see”.

My BCP board service is a continuation and manifestation of the values learned from childhood, but more importantly for me, carrying on the legacy of my mother. Board  service is not only a tool to give back to your community but also serves as a great platform to develop professional skill sets like strategic planning and resource allocations, diplomacy, governance, and public speaking/ gravitas. Given my deep experience directly with  Baltimore City Public Schools as a student and son of an administrator, I bring a unique perspective to the board that provides diversity of thought and perspective.

How is your BCP service different from your other community leadership?

It’s different and similar. The industry sector is different, since most of my other service has been for national association boards or for finance-focused nonprofits like NABA. BCP is more grassroots than NABA, so its impact can be developed and implemented quicker. But it all boils down to supporting a mission that’s bigger than myself.

How did you learn about BCP?

While working with a State Delegate in Annapolis on his portion of the state budget, I met a colleague who knew of BCP’s board. This led to lunch with Dr. Muriel Berkeley, co-founder of BCP. She loved the fact that my mom was in City Schools, that I had gone to City Schools, and lived in the city. As such, I was able to bring a fresh new perspective from someone who is  deeply ingrained in the communities we serve.

Thanks, Ryan, for your service!
