Several young artists from Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP) neighborhood charter schools, City Springs Elementary School and Govans Elementary School were selected for last month’s fyi…For Your Inspiration exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art.
For 17 years, the BMA has sponsored this city-wide student exhibition of artwork by City Schools students from pre-K through 12th grade. The student work and creativity include a variety of traditional and surprising materials and techniques that showcase the art curricula of different schools. Teachers enter student work, which is selected by the BMA for the show.
Held this year from May 22 through 26, the artists, families, and proud teachers and administrators enjoyed a community reception to see their work in the BMA on May 25. Congratulations to these BCP artists!

We spoke to City Springs art teacher Annie Owlett about her talented students, the City Springs’ art program, and the power of the arts in education.
Our students were thrilled to have their work in the show! After submitting the work, I had one student asking me weekly if it was time to go see it. Celebrating student artwork is critical because it reinforces to the students that their voice is important and that their creative expression matters. Having work displayed at the BMA broadens their audience to the entire Baltimore community and gives them an opportunity to shine.
One of the projects in the photo is a self portrait. If you look closely, Kyla used several techniques to add special details into the portrait about her identity like her family members’ names, a book, holiday symbols, and her favorite foods. You can learn so much about her by looking at her work.
In the other three pieces, I asked students to transform themselves into superheroes. Students imagined themselves in a comic book scene. I love that each piece tells a unique story. The curriculum that I have created at City Springs includes a mix of art skills, concepts, and opportunities for creating personally meaningful work.
