WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GOVANS MEMORY?

Govans was a fun place to learn and grow! It was my first school and helped me become who I am today. Not only did Govans teach me reading and math but also important life lessons and how to be a good citizen, like raising your hand if you want to speak. If not, you are talking over people, and that’s disrespectful. I have a lot of favorite teachers like Ms. Gray, Ms. Kelly, and Mr. P. who accepted and understood me. That taught me to be more open to others. Now I accept everyone as my friend.

HOW DID GOVANS PREPARE YOU FOR BALTIMORE POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE?

I was really good at math in elementary school, so my teachers challenged me by giving me extra problems. They encouraged me to keep pushing myself and that built my confidence. For middle school, I applied and got accepted into the Ingenuity Project [for students gifted in math and science], which feeds into Poly, where I am currently a freshman.

The Ingenuity Project is a highly competitive program that provides students with advanced STEM programming in middle and high school.

PLANS FOR BEYOND POLY:

I want to be a mechanical engineer or maybe go to trade school. I am going to start looking at engineering schools in my sophomore year.

Congratulations, Djily, on all you’re accomplishing!

Govans Elementary School is proud to be a partner feeder school with Bridges. Djily is part of Bridges’ 13-year program that provides individualized academic and school placement support and summer/school year programming for students from age 9 to 23.
