Hampstead Hill Presents “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical Jr.”
May 13, 2026
The Hampstead Hill Players, the musical theater group at Hampstead Hill Academy (HHA), presented its 23rd production, “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical Jr.” to packed audiences.
On April 30 through May 2, 55 actors and two crew members gave four stellar performances of the show, based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book. The show’s themes of empowerment, love of reading, courage, and standing up against adversity resonated with HHA’s community values.
This was the first show with Kaitlyn Barbee, HHA’s Music Teacher, as Director and Music Director. “It was such an honor to direct this year’s HHA Players’ production of Matilda Jr.,” Ms. Barbee said. “Musical theater has always been a passion of mine, so it has been an absolute dream to share that love with our students. The children worked tirelessly together to bring this show to life. Beyond rehearsing lines, music, and choreography, they became a family — supporting and encouraging one another every step of the way. The show was an incredible success because of their kindness, dedication, and hard work. I am so proud of each and every one of them!”
HHA staff also gave their time and talent to the production, leading the cast and crew through rehearsals from fall until the final curtain. Thank you to:
Director and Music Director: Kaitlyn Barbee
Producer: Michelle Kaminaris
Stage Manager: Meghan Bierley
Choreographer: Abigail Green
Set Designer: Adam Bradbury
Technical Assistant: Rebekah Nicholson
Sound and Lighting Designer: Matt Cobb
“The theater provides a unique opportunity for many of our students to be a part of something special,” wrote Matt Hornbeck, HHA Principal, in the playbill. “Our school community is a showcase for outstanding talent, on stage and behind the scenes. Having everyone—students, staff, and parent volunteers—come together, through things big and small, is the beauty of producing a show at HHA. Congratulations to the Hampstead Hill Players on yet another tremendous accomplishment!”
