Govans Elementary School (GES) enjoyed its 2nd Annual International Day on Saturday, May 20, 2023. More than 500 GES students, families, teachers, staff, and community members enjoyed a day of “traveling” around the globe. The event celebrated the culture, food, music, and crafts of the countries recognizing the diverse heritage of the GES community: Chile; El Salvador; Guatemala; Nigeria; Jamaica;  the Philippines; and Senegal.

After checking in, each child got their picture taken and then assembled a passport. They took their passports around to each tent (nine in all) to get them stamped and to learn about each country’s culture.

Families hosting tents went all out, sharing traditional food, drinks, and sweets, dress, henna, beading, crafts, and more. A lively performance from Djembe drummers, face painting, and bounce houses added to the fun.

At GES, as with each Baltimore Curriculum Project charter school, the mission is to create a safe, warm, and welcoming school environment where students, families, and staff feel like they belong and where they are cared about as individuals. GES’s International Day embodies this mission by celebrating the school’s diverse community and building connectedness.
