Wolfe Street Celebrates World Down Syndrome Acceptance Day

A special celebration happens each year on March 21st, a day chosen because it signifies the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome that causes Down syndrome.

This year, World Down Syndrome Day occurred on Saturday, March 21, 2026, so Wolfe Street Academy celebrated a few days earlier on March 19th. Created by the United Nations in 2012, World Down Syndrome Day raises awareness and advocates for and celebrates the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down syndrome.

To celebrate individuality throughout our school community, we encouraged students and staff to mismatched socks—the symbol of World Down Syndrome Acceptance Day—to represent the uniqueness of individuals with Down syndrome and to celebrate diversity.

To deepen understanding and encourage acceptance, students participated in a variety of meaningful activities:

  • Grade levels were provided with lessons and videos that connected to classroom learning.
  • A special morning meeting presentation helped share the importance of the day schoolwide.
  • All students received Down Syndrome awareness bracelets as a reminder of support and inclusion.
  • First-grade students enjoyed additional celebrations, including receiving mismatched socks and the book Just Ask, which highlights the value of understanding and embracing differences.

“Wolfe Street Academy is proud to foster a welcoming environment where every student is valued and celebrated,” Ms. Kickbush adds.

Thank you, Wolves, for making sure that everyone is included and differences are embraced.
