Frederick Families Are Speaking Up—and the Results Are Strong

For years, Frederick Elementary School worked hard to encourage more families to complete the annual City Schools Family Survey. This year, that effort is paying off in a big way. Not only did more Frederick families respond this year than in years past, but their feedback reflects a strong and positive connection to the school.

The survey gives families an opportunity to share their experiences and perspectives on important aspects of their child’s education, including school climate, communication, family engagement, academic preparation and overall satisfaction. Just as importantly, the feedback gives Frederick’s educators and leaders valuable information about what is working well and where there are opportunities to continue improving.

Frederick Families Report Strong Results

Frederick’s results were above the Baltimore City Public Schools district average in every major survey category:

Family Composite Score89%82%
Overall Satisfaction91%83%
School Climate91%84%
Family Engagement89%83%
Academic/Career Preparation84%77%

The results also show meaningful growth from Frederick’s previous survey. The Family Composite Score increased 7 percentage points, Family Engagement increased 5 points, Overall Satisfaction increased 7 points, and Teacher/School Communication increased 6 points. Academic/Career Preparation saw the largest increase, rising 13 percentage points from the previous survey.

Some of the individual responses are particularly encouraging:

  • 96% of families said Frederick communicates clear expectations for learning.
  • 95% said the school provides ways for families to support their child’s academic success at home.
  • 95% described the school as welcoming to their family.
  • 93% said Frederick believes all students have the ability to meet high expectations.

Why Family Feedback Matters

A strong response rate matters because family voices are an essential part of understanding the school experience. When more families participate, school leaders have a broader and more representative picture of how families are experiencing the school, not just the perspectives of a small group.

The survey also gives families a direct way to celebrate what Frederick is doing well while identifying areas where the school can continue to grow. For example, families identified a range of resources that could help their children succeed next year, including after-school offerings, arts and music programming, summer school or camps, athletics, mentoring, tutoring and mental health services. This is also done through annual budget meetings that specifically ask for family feedback on how schools plan and invest their resources. To learn more about how families can participate in the school budget process, visit the City Schools Family Guide.

Frederick’s strong survey participation reflects a growing partnership between the school and its families. When families take the time to share their experiences, ideas and priorities, they help schools better understand its community and make informed decisions about how to support students. That kind of partnership is something we value at all our BCP schools.
